Vor gut zwei Wochen ging es zum Klettersommerabschluss noch mal in die Lienzer Dolomiten. Die Karlsbaderhütte sollte uns als Stützpunkt dienen. Das Wetterglück war auf unserer Seite, vier Tage Sonnenschein und stabile Großwetterlage. Temperaturmäßig war es Ende September schon richtig herbstlich, die Karlsbaderhütte liegt ja auch auf 2260 Meter Seehöhe.
A bit more than two weeks ago we finished this climbing-summer at Lienzer Dolomiten. We chose Karlsbaderhütte for basecamp. Fortunately the weather was on our side and we enjoyed four sunny days. As it was end of September the temperatures were already really autumnally, because Karlsbaderhütte is located quite high (at 2260 m.a.s.l.) .
Die Karlsbaderhütte liegt in einem Bergkessel malerisch vor dem Laserzsee, der auch die Wasserversorgung der Hütte sichert. Diese Bergkulisse ist auch ein wahres Kletterparadies.
In the middle of a huge mountain basin Karlsbaderhütte is built picture-perfectly next to Laserzsee, which also ensures its water supply. The surrounding mountain panorama is also an eldorado for rockclimbers.
Bei der Routenwahl hat man die Qual der Wahl. Gemäß der Jahreszeit beschlossen wir aber, uns eher von den langen Nordwandrouten fernzuhalten, um auch ein paar Sonnenstrahlen abzubekommen.
You will be spoilt for choise, there are so many routes. Because of the cooler temperatures we decided to avoid the long Northern wall routes, as it is very nice to catch some sun while climbing.

Kombination aus Nordostkante und Gamsplatte V- 7 pitches (Kleine Gamswiesenspitze)
Sehr feine Plattenkletterei, grossteils gut abgesichert, beide Routen empfehlenswert und kombinierbar.
Very nice slab climb, mainly well bolted, both routes are recommendable and can be combined as they cross in the middle of the wall.
Nordwestgrat IV+ 9 pitches (auf den Kerschbaumer Törlspitz)
Perfekte Route als Nachmittagsprogramm nach der Gamswiesenspitze, liegt quasi am Abstiegsweg.

Leo Jeller Gedächtnisführe V+ 16 pitches (Kleine Laserzwand)
Klassiker auf die Kleine Laserzwand, teilweise recht luftig und durch steilen Fels, zum Teil etwas längere Hakenabstände, Schlüsselstelle gut abgesichert, Stände tiptop eingebohrt. Achtung: Wir hatten zwei Topos, die nicht ganz ident waren, eines mit 15SL, eines 16SL (ohne Zwischenstand nach Schlüsselstelle gerechnet) – hat bei uns für ein wenig Verwirrung und zwei Verhauer gesorgt, ansonsten ist die Routenfindung relativ übersichtlich.
One of the classic routes onto Kleine Laserzwand, some parts are straight across the steep exposed wall, sometimes the ancor points are set in longer distances, the crux is well bolted, belaystations are perfectly bolted. Watch out, we had two topos that weren´t 100% the same, one showed us 15 pitches and one 16 pitches (counted without the extra belaystation after the crux). This led us to two short astrays that we had to climb back. Beside this, the line of the route isn´t hard to find.
Bügeleisenkante IV- 13 pitches (Kleine Laserzwand)
Schöne lange, leichte Kletterei, nur eine Stelle IV-, sonst II-III, auch wenn die Route großteils mit Thenius-Haken ausgestattet ist – da könnte man das Seil einfach reinlegen – empfielt sich die Verwendung von Exen zur Verminderung der Seilreibung.
Long and easy one, only one pitch is IV-, the rest II-III. Even though the route is maily equipped with Thenius-hooks where you just can put your rope through, using quickdraws is highly recommended to minimize the rope friction.
Schmittkamin III 4 pitches (Roter Turm)
Wer “ganz” rauf will, der muss den Roten Turm natürlich mitnehmen, sehr feiner Aussichtsgipfel! Rundblick über Großvenediger, Großglockner, Sonnblick, Triglav und Dolomiten. Da geht einem das Herz auf!
If you want to get really on top you can´t miss Roter Turm, it´s such a great outlook! A panoramic view along Großvenediger, Großglockner, Sonnblick, Triglav and the Dolomite Alps. Amazing!
Jürgen Kanzian Gedächtnisführe V+ 7 pitches (Kleine Laserzwand, Kleinster Westpfeiler)
Direkte Linie auf den Westpfeiler, Stände eingebohrt, nur die notwendigsten Zwischensicherungen, aber mit einem Satz Friends (BD Camalots 0.3-2) und einem kleinen Satz Kleile super absicherbar, sehr feine Route in nicht immer ganz festem Fels mit spektakulärem Abseiler als Ausstieg.
Direct line onto the Western tower, belay stations bolted, anchor points reduced to essential ones, but with a set of friends (BD Camalots 0.3-2) and a small set of nuts you have countless options to set extra anchor points. Great tour along not always 100% solid rock, for going down you have to rappel down via VII+ route.
Fazit: Ein Klettereldorado, wo wirklich für jeden Kletterer was dabei ist, die Karlsbaderhütte lässt außerdem verpflegungtechnisch auch keine Wünsche offen.
Bottom line: An eldorado for every climber plus food and acommodation is really great at Karlsbaderhütte.
Auch wenn dieses Gebiet alle Schwierigkeitgrade bietet, sollte man schon etwas an Klettererfahrung mitbringen, da die Routen teilweise recht lange und die Absicherung gerade in den leichteren Seillängen zum Teil recht alpin gehalten ist. Der Topo-Hinweis “ausreichend abgesichert” bei IV- kann da zum Beispiel heißen, dass auch mal nur 3 Bohrhaken auf 48 Meter sind, dem sollte man sich schon bewusst sein. D.h. bei manchen Routen sind ein Satz Friends (ich hatte BD Camalots Größe 0.3-2 mit) und ein kleiner Satz Keile sehr empfehlenswert.
Although this area offers routes in all difficulty grades, you should consider that quite a bit of climbing experience is essential, because the routes are mainly pretty long and at easy pitches there are sometimes long distances between the bolts. The topo-note “adequately bolted” at a IV- can sometimes mean that there are just 3 bolts on 48meters, you should keep that in mind. That means at some routes I would highly recommend to bring a set of friends (I used BD Camalots size 0.3-2) and a small set of nuts.
